I think you could add one important advice: Don't be alone on the internet.

If you make an information push site or only publish your products and you link to no other site and do not have any links from elsewhere linking to you, you're alone. Your website is an island in the web.

Use twitter, Linked-In Hyves, etc linking to the newest articles on your site. Try getting a pressrelease published through independent news sites linking to your site. Try cooperating with fellow websites in the chain of information: link to them, let them link to you.

The more tentacles in the web, the easier you are being found, the more important the Search engine will think you are.

Don't do this just once, its a continuous effort to think / search for an interesting subject to write something about your product in the view of another website and to find ways of cooperation with other websites.
